This week is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) Awareness Week. “GERD” refers to a condition in which acid builds up in the stomach and refluxes into the esophagus. After prolonged exposure to acidic contents, esophageal tissue is severely damaged and breathing, eating and other day-to-day activities become difficult to impossible. Because many GERD symptoms seem so ordinary, it may go untreated for a long period of time before proper diagnosis. Heartburn is one of the most common symptoms of GERD, but since it may also be a symptom of a different condition, heartburn sufferers should consult their doctors to get thorough diagnostic treatment. GERD is a chronic condition that is not yet entirely curable but with proper treatment and care, however, GERD sufferers can live long, fulfilling lives.
Throughout the week, the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders urges those who experience symptoms of GERD to call their heartburn helpline or see a physician as soon as possible. Encourage your friends, co-workers and employees to keep an eye on their gastroesophageal health with heart-shaped stress balls or customized promotional keychains.
