Craniofacial Acceptance Month

September is Craniofacial Acceptance Month, in which we recognize all those who must cope with various craniofacial disorders, and the organizations that support them.

Craniofacial disorders are facial or skull shape abnormalities, often caused at birth, but which can also result later in life from disease or trauma. In addition to dealing with physical deformity, those inflicted are suceptible to further degradation of their condition, which can sometimes result in death. But modern medicine and new surgery procedures can be very helpful in improving certain conditions.

Today is great day to visit the Children's Craniofacial Association online to learn more about what we can do to help. In addition, New York Yankees All-Star Jorge Posada has started his own foundation http://www.jorgeposada.com/foundation/ for children who suffer from craniosyntosis, a disorder that causes misshapen skulls from birth. Posada holds a benefit dinner every year, attended by many Yankees players from Alex Rodriguez to Derek Jeter.

If you know anyone with a craniofacial disorder, or if you just wish to promote awareness because more people need to know, traditional (or untraditional) ribbons are a great way to go. Or if you want to show these wide-eyed kids you care about them, and support them in their quest for health and happiness, brighten their day with a candy item of some sort.

This month is about showing we understand and care about those who struggle with craniofacial disorders. All it takes is a little awereness and a little openheartedness.
