National Scleroderma Awareness Month

June is National Scleroderma Awareness Month. Although June is almost over, it is important to raise awareness for this cause. Scleroderma, also known as systemic sclerosis, is an autoimmune rheumatic disease of the connective tissue that affects both the skin and internal organs. There are three forms of the disease, each of which affects a different area--or combination of areas--around the body.

Because so little is known about this disease, the purpose of National Scleroderma Awareness Month is to inform people about the disease and encourage further research into its causes, which are currently unknown, how to treat the symptoms, and also how to possibly prevent it. There are a number of ways to honor this awareness month. On a personal level, take the time to investigate this disease and inform yourself. If there are any local events geared toward honoring this month, attend them, and encourage people you know to join you. On a corporate or sponsorship level, informational sessions about scleroderma are common and great to raise awareness. Also, a great way that companies utilize to get people excited about and interested in this cause is through colorful marketing items like promotional reflective bracelets or promotional t-shirts. Whatever your role, acknowledge the importance of June as National Scleroderma Awareness Month!
